Panik House / Synapse Collaboration Under Way...

Just wanted to give you all a VERY long over-due update on what's happening in the world of Synapse Films.

Right now, I'm in Los Angeles working every single day on the transfers for the seven Toei films we are doing in conjunction with Panik House Entertainment. Here's the list of films (I'll get to the status on other releases toward the end):

Edogawa Ranpo Zenshu: Kyofu Kikei Ningen
[aka Horror Of The Malformed Men]

Kaidan Hebi-onna
[aka Snake Woman's Curse]

Yoen Dokufu Den : Hannya no Ohyaku
[aka Sexy Deadly Legend: Female Demon Ohyaku]

Yoen Dokufu Den : Hitokiri Okatsu
[aka Sexy Deadly Legend: Quickdraw Okatsu]

Yoen Dokufu Den : Okatsu Kyojo Tabi
[aka Sexy Deadly Legend: Okatsu's Epic Journey]

Gincho Wataridori
[aka Wandering Ginza Butterfly]

Gincho Nagaremono Mesuneko Bakuchi
[aka Wandering Ginza She-Cat Gambler]

Currently, just as I write this, I'm in the studio on Reel 4 of Malformed Men. We've finished the video transfers of Female Demon Ohysku, Ginza Butterfly and Ginza She-Cat Gambler. You'll be happy to know these transfers FAR exceed our expectations. Because of the age of the films (going on almost 40 years old for some of these), I expected them to be, well, somewhat of a mess... they aren't. Actually, the transfers have, so far, been quite stunning. The colors and detail in the elements are just jaw-dropping! Sure, they will need a bit of work (I'm just that way... I'm too much of a perfectionist to let some things go), but I assure you that these transfers of the titles I've done so far are some of the best work we've done. And, yes, we are transferring them in high-definition!

No date set yet for these and Matt, from Panik House, and I still have to chat about any extras, but these will be released sometime in 2007, along with our releases of MADAME O, PARTY 7 and KARAOKE TERROR. 2007 will be a big year for Asian films from Synapse!

As for the rest of what Synapse is working on right now, next week I'm coordinating the materials for Christina Lindberg's EXPOSED (aka EXPONERAD), LUCKER [The Director's Final Cut] and BASKET CASE 2. We are also finishing up the audio and commentary mix for BLACK ROSES!

In other news:

Just in case you missed the news at FANGORIA.COM, Synapse Films has acquired the rights to release the classic 80s monster flick, THE KINDRED, starring Amanda Pays and Rod Steiger! No date has been set yet for the release.

This is beyond coolness. I've been waiting for legit U.S. editions of these movies (and many more like them) since I started finding out about this stuff -- easily a decade or more.

BTW, any word from Synapse on when you might be doing HD titles, and in what formats?

Most excellent, can't wait to hear more on the Toei classics in the future.

holy crap!!!! one of the top ero-guros on my to see list? something that i haven't seen (but have the novelization tie-in) from the Audubon vaults? my freaking favorite heavy-metal horror movie ever? 2007 is going to fucking OWN!

somewhat unrelated- i used to work at a video store called the Movie Fan in Normal, my boss had told me you guys were once based out of Normal. Any truth to this? Ever stop into the best video store in central Illinois?

Yep! Synapse Films was in Bloomington/Normal, IL for about 4 years before moving to Michigan.

I certainly remember THE MOVIE FAN store there!

I don't want you to rush...but definitely cannot wait for the DVDs. You've got some very interesting titles.

Looking forward to these, chaps. It would be ace if you could use the original poster art for the DVD covers. It was a shame that Panik House never went for that with their previous Pinky Violence releases.

Good news on the Lindberg DVD too.

I am ecstatic over your aquisition of 'The Kindred'! Good to see that this film - 20 years ago, a boyhood fave - will be handled under the watch of horror film lovers!

I am curious as to how these deals are worked out - do you just find out who owns the property and make an offer?

Hey Don! I'm so glad DEPRAVED in still in the works! Will you still be able to use the soundtrack 45 RPM I lent to you at Cinema Wasteland a couple years ago? It's been a while and I had wondered if the disc was still happening! :)
